My Freaking Long Response to the Issue of Abortion
Brace yourself.
I think that making abortions illegal is like trying to kill a dandelion by cutting off the yellowish-orange flower part. It’ll make it less visible, but it isn’t going to accomplish your goal. You have to get to the root.
Hear me out. I’ve done a lot of soul searching on the issue of abortion as well. A LOT! And here’s where I stand:
I hate abortions and wish they’d never happen, and I have worked with christian pregnancy centers to try to convince women not to get them. However, the reality is that our media is nurturing an extremely sexually charged nation, especially among our youth. In a culture as obsessed with ‘free love’ as ours is, abortions are going to take place. Period. And making them illegal doesn’t mean that terrified young girls- and even grown women- aren’t going to have the procedure done. They will. Only instead of the procedure being performed by professionals with reputations to uphold and lawsuits to avoid, they will be performed by outlaws with absolutely no accountability. If the women are harmed in anyway, there is no one to protect them or defend them.
Don’t misunderstand me. I hate abortions. BUT, at this point, I hate the idea of illegal abortions even more.
Actually, what I really wish is that abortions were never made legal in the first place. I think we may have never gotten to this point. But it happened and these are the cards we’ve been dealt. Remember the last time our country tried to outlaw something that had been previously legal, that our culture had grown accustomed to? Yeah, that was called Prohibition, and it didn’t work out so great.
I wonder… Who would be the Al Capone of underground abortions? I know it’s a ridiculous thought, but I’m just trying to make a point.
In a perfect world, we could make a problem go away just by making it illegal. But in this world, I know that’s just not the case. And I also know that abortions are really a side effect of an even bigger issue. And that issue, the sexual sins of our culture, is the fight that we should be fighting. No amount of laws prohibiting anything will make up for the fact that the church is not really winning the battle for the hearts of this generation. And no amount of political views are going to make up for the lack of prayer for our generation and our country. We need to be the Church of GOD that actually does a legitimate job representing a risen savior in a world that needs light and hope and a reason not to kill unborn children. That’s what will make a difference.
And while we’re at it, we can recognize that our country is in A LOT of trouble in so many other ways as well, and base our political decisions on all of the topics that concern our condition and the heart of God, rather than ignoring other important issues because we’re distracted by a single one.
That said, I hope you can see that there’s a difference between ‘promoting’ abortions and not thinking that making them illegal would be productive at this time. In my opinion, as far as politicians are concerned, it could just mean that said politician may simply recognize that we’re battling root systems and not the yellowish-orange blooms.
